Description:
Abstract: This fencing potential layer is a merged representation of the 27 allotment data files submitted to the BLM by the USFS for the GRSG CEA and the GSSP snapshot of approved BLM grazing data made on 5/24/2012. This aggregate national dataset identifies pasture and allotment borders, represented as linear features, within BLM and FS managed public lands. This dataset serves as a surrogate for fencing potential across BLM and FS managed lands. Pasture and allotment polygons were converted to linear features using the “Polygon to Line” tool in ArcGIS. To identify areas of overlap between the BLM and FS data, an intersect operation was performed. The results were used to erase the overlapping geometry to avoid double counting. A dissolved version of the intersect results were then appended to the erased dataset, resulting in a single representation of overlapping features and identification of management for each linear feature (BLM, FS or BLMFS). See the description section for precursor dataset generation details. The resulting allotment data was merged with the linear pastures data to represent the potential for fencing in BLM managed lands. FS:This allotment layer is a merged representation of the 27 allotment data files submitted to the BLM by the USFS for the GRSG CEA. As needed, records with ‘Unit_Type’ = 1 were selected for the merge, while the remainder were omitted. Additionally, records recorded as wild horse and burrow areas in the Humboldt Toiyabe NF data were included in this dataset while wild horse and burrow areas in the R05 data were excluded per instruction. This aggregate dataset identifies allotment borders, represented as linear features, within FS managed public lands. This dataset serves as a surrogate for fencing potential across FS managed lands. Allotment polygons were converted to linear features using the “Polygon to Line” tool in ArcGIS. Specific selection instructions for the creation of this dataset follow: We have completed retrieving and posting our Forest Service grazing allotment and wild horse/burro datasets to the ftp2 drive below. 1) Grazing allotments are in Grazing/ There are 5 datasets, one for each region covered in the western EIS’. Each is a zipped geodatabase. For those features not strictly identified as ‘Allotment’ in each feature class, the attribute ‘unit_type’ should be used to distinguish them with the corresponding value of ‘1’. Note that not all feature classes and their records distinguish open vs closed etc. Layer recordkeeping varies between regions and forests. 2) Wild horse and burro lands are in WHB/ Pretty straightforward.
